(rtc says: yall can blame me for this one cos, well, in pondering what could be so wrong with the og 'yo' that i felt the goooorgeous black chiney reggae rmx so much more so much i decided it had to be the distracting knocking, ahh the knocking of that hideous beat! (nah its a good beat really.) and hmm such strangely familiar knocking too.... and so orrrrn. soz.)

when u wasnt rasmus*

hearing "when u wasnt famous" on the radio allllll the time i keep trying to think of a precedent for its clumpy cacophony of a beat, and all that came to mind is 05's military riddim

jagged edge - good luck charm

i'd throw away this ice
and give up my j.e. pieces
just to get a piece of your love forever

omg brian would TURN IN HIS PIECE and LEAVE THE EDGE for this human rabbit's foot lady? that's real! "good luck charm" is basically the "walked outta heaven" of je's forthcoming leaked-one-million-years-ago album - same tempo, same structure, same meandering sort of melody, except replacing the dramatically rain swept karmic redemption with rapturous sunshine keyboards and somewhat callous analogies. who wants to be compared to fluffy dice!? so while you can feel there is less at stake, the lightness also makes it less of a harrowing emotional ordeal. either way i could listen to this type of slow jam all the live day long! sometimes i do wonder though, if jd/johnta austin were to hand them a song as tightly arranged as "burn" or "we belong together" what would jagged edge do with it?? perhaps it is antithetical to their spirit.

busy signal - so busy

rtc claims that busy is still consistently half inching vybz' flow but i think for the past year he has blossomed into his own beautiful man, erm often by mimicking other people's flows who arent vybz at all*! such as finding the perfect match for eminem's "way i am" style on "fade away", illustrative of busy currently being radio's most attention-seeking and also that being a clever and creative mimic is 100x better than being a somewhat decent mc. so now with "so busy" (and last year with "born & grow") he also illustrates the best time to check for a dancehall dude's work is when they are tentatively putting together the full album, recording some super-crafted one-offs to compliment the popular riddim tunes. and this beat sort of sounds like "put ur hands where my eyes can see" which makes me think of tanya stephens doing "goggle" over it, HOW CAN THAT BE ANYTHING OTHER THAN KEWL.

* also check for "that bad eeh" where busy strings together a load of other hooks JUST LIKE them two krs one songs from the 90s, ahhh could he be the krs of jamaica?
